You can make appointments at the Student Advice and Counseling Center (SACC) by phone, e-mail, or just by dropping by.It is not shameful or embarrassing to get help. Please do not worry about your teachers, advisors, and/or friends finding out about your counseling sessions. We protect student privacy and we are obligated to keep all counseling confidential.Our student counseling services are free, so please contact us.

The process of counseling

Step 1

Make an appointment by email or phone. If counselors are available, we are also able to accommodate walk-in sessions.
If this is your first time at the Student Advice and Counseling Center, please go to the reception desk 15 minutes before your session.

Step 2

Fill out the documents and sign the consent form.

Informed Consent for Counseling Services

Step 3

Have your initial session with a counselor.

Step 4

For ongoing counseling sessions, gathering information, and defining counseling goals/future plans happen over several sessions.

Step 5

Work according to the counseling plan and toward your set goals. Modify goals and approaches as necessary.

Step 6

Evaluate goal achievement and counseling. If necessary, please come again anytime to consult us.

Faculty and Staff

For Faculty and Staff

As part of our indirect support for students, our Counseling Center offers professional consultation and advice regarding student issues, as well as training for faculty and staff (FD/SD: Faculty Development/Staff Development).
Consultation appointments can be made by phone, email, or in person.
Depending on the complexity of the issue, consultations may be conducted by phone or online; please request a phone or online consultation when making your reservation.

If you, your friend or your student requires emergency assistance or crisis intervention, please call the numbers below, state the situation clearly, and ask for help.

Call for an Ambulance: 119

Do not hesitate to call 119 for an ambulance or go to the nearest medical institution immediately if you or your friend/student:

  • Are unable to control the impulse to self-harm or harm others
  • Appear to be experiencing delusions, hallucinations, or severe disorientation (losing touch with reality)

Call 110 immediately to ensure the safety of all parties involve if your friend or student:

  • Is actively engaging in self-harm or violent behavior

Become a peer supporter

Hokkaido University takes applications for peer supporters at designated times throughout the year. Peer supporters are paid part-time staff (administrative assistant) of the university. Check out the peer support unit web site or come to the Center for more information.
